Seek ye diligently and teach one another words of wisdom; yea, seek ye out of the best books words of wisdom; seek learning, even by study and also by faith.
“We counsel parents and children to give highest priority to family
prayer, family home evening, gospel study and instruction, and wholesome
family activities. However worthy and appropriate other demands or
activities may be, they must not be permitted to displace the
divinely-appointed duties that only parents and families can adequately
perform.”
"The ways of the Lord are different from the ways of man. Man’s ways
remove people from office or business when they grow old or become
disabled. But man’s ways are not and never will be the Lord’s ways. Our
sustaining of prophets is a personal commitment that we will do our
utmost to uphold their prophetic priorities. Our sustaining is an
oath-like indication that we recognize their calling as a prophet to be
legitimate and binding upon us."
"Spiritual truth cannot be ignored—especially divine commandments.
Keeping divine commandments brings blessings, every time! Breaking
divine commandments brings a loss of blessings, every time!"
"A pivotal spiritual attribute is that of self-mastery—the strength to
place reason over appetite. Self-mastery builds a strong conscience. And
your conscience determines your moral responses in difficult, tempting,
and trying situations. Fasting helps your spirit to develop dominance
over your physical appetites. Fasting also increases your access to
heaven’s help, as it intensifies your prayers. Why the need for
self-mastery? God implanted strong appetites within us for nourishment
and love, vital for the human family to be perpetuated. When we master our appetites within the bounds of God’s laws, we can enjoy longer life, greater love, and consummate joy."
"And if you want to know more about life after death, about heaven, about
God’s plan for you; if you want to know more about the Lord Jesus
Christ, His Atonement, and the Restoration of His Church as it was
originally established, ask the missionaries! They can help you"
"Just as the body requires daily food for survival, the spirit needs
nourishment as well. The spirit is nurtured by eternal truth. Last year
we celebrated the 400th anniversary of the King James translation of the
Holy Bible. And we have had the Book of Mormon for nearly 200 years. It
has now been translated in its entirety or as selections into 107
languages. Because of these and other precious scriptures, we know that
God is our Eternal Father and that His Son, Jesus Christ, is our Savior
and Redeemer. For these spiritual gifts, thanks be to God!"
"One of the most important concepts of revealed religion is that of a
sacred covenant. In legal language, a covenant generally denotes an
agreement between two or more parties. But in a religious context, a
covenant is much more significant. It is a sacred promise with God. He
fixes the terms. Each person may choose to accept those terms. If one
accepts the terms of the covenant and obeys God’s law, he or she
receives the blessings associated with the covenant. We know that “when
we obtain any blessing from God, it is by obedience to that law upon
which it is predicated.”
"Obedience allows God’s blessings to flow without constraint. He will
bless His obedient children with freedom from bondage and misery. And He
will bless them with more light."
"Now in this day of the Internet, there
are new and exciting ways you can do missionary work. You can invite
friends and neighbors to visit the new mormon.org Web site. If you have
blogs and online social networks, you could link your sites to
mormon.org. And there you can create your own personal profile. Each
profile includes an expression of belief, an experience, and a
testimony. Because this is a new feature, most of these profiles are
available in English. Profiles in other languages will follow.
"These profiles can have a profound
influence for good. Two months ago a young man named Zac—a freshman in
college—saw an ad for mormon.org on television in Baton Rouge,
Louisiana. He connected with the Web site and was intrigued by the
profiles of Church members. At our Web site he found the link that
informed him where he could attend church. The next Sunday, dressed in a
white shirt and tie, he attended church, was introduced to members of
the ward, and enjoyed all three hours of meetings. He was invited to a
member’s home for dinner, followed by his first missionary lesson. In
less than two weeks, he was baptized and confirmed as a member of the
Church."
"We are exalted when we can dwell together with our extended families in
the presence of Almighty God. The Prophet Joseph Smith foresaw our duty:
“The great day of the Lord is at hand …, ” he said. “Let us, therefore,
as a church and a people, and as Latter‑day Saints, offer unto the Lord
an offering in righteousness; and let us present in his holy temple … a
book containing the records of our dead, which shall be worthy of all
acceptation.”
"Revelation need not all come at once. It may be incremental. “Saith the
Lord God: I will give unto the children of men line upon line, precept
upon precept, here a little and there a little; and blessed are those
who hearken unto my precepts, and lend an ear unto my counsel, for they
shall learn wisdom; for unto him that receiveth I will give more.” Patience and perseverance are part of our eternal progression."
"When should we pray? Whenever we desire! Alma taught, “Counsel with the
Lord in all thy doings, and he will direct thee for good; yea, when thou
liest down at night lie down unto the Lord, … and when thou risest in
the morning let thy heart be full of thanks unto God; and if ye do these
things, ye shall be lifted up at the last day.”
"Harmony in marriage comes only when one esteems the welfare of his or
her spouse among the highest of priorities. When that really happens, a
celestial marriage becomes a reality, bringing great joy in this life
and in the life to come."
"Eternal life, or celestial glory or exaltation, is a conditional gift.
Conditions of this gift have been established by the Lord, who said, “If
you keep my commandments and endure to the end you shall have eternal
life, which gift is the greatest of all the gifts of God.” Those qualifying conditions include faith in the Lord, repentance,
baptism, receiving the Holy Ghost, and remaining faithful to the
ordinances and covenants of the temple."
"Love for the Book of Mormon expands one’s love for the Bible and vice
versa. Scriptures of the Restoration do not compete with the Bible; they
complement the Bible. We are indebted to martyrs who gave their lives
so that we could have the Bible. It establishes the everlasting nature
of the gospel and of the plan of happiness. The Book of Mormon restores
and underscores biblical doctrines such as tithing, the temple, the Sabbath day, and the priesthood."
"Repentance is the Lord’s regimen for spiritual growth. King Benjamin
explained that “the natural man is an enemy to God, and has been from
the fall of Adam, and will be, forever and ever, unless he yields to the
enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and
becometh a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord, and becometh
as a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to
submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even
as a child doth submit to his father.” Brothers and sisters, that means conversion! Repentance is conversion! A
repentant soul is a converted soul, and a converted soul is a repentant
soul."
"Here on earth, missionary work is crucial to the gathering of Israel.
The gospel was to be taken first to the “lost sheep of the house of
Israel.”Consequently, servants of the Lord have gone forth proclaiming the
Restoration. In many nations our missionaries have searched for those of
scattered Israel; they have hunted for them “out of the holes of the
rocks”; and they have fished for them as in ancient days."
"Marriage was intended by the Lord to endure beyond physical death. His
plan offers eternal perpetuation of the family in the kingdom of God.
His plan provides temples and opportunities to officiate therein for the
living and the dead. A marriage sealed there launches a husband and
wife into that grand order of unity so necessary to the perfection of
God’s work."
"I recognize that, on occasion, some of our most fervent prayers may seem
to go unanswered. We wonder, “Why?” I know that feeling! I know the
fears and tears of such moments. But I also know that our prayers are
never ignored. Our faith is never unappreciated. I know that an all-wise
Heavenly Father’s perspective is much broader than is ours. While we
know of our mortal problems and pain, He knows of our immortal progress
and potential. If we pray to know His will and submit ourselves to it
with patience and courage, heavenly healing can take place in His own
way and time."
"Great is the knowledge that “whatever principle of intelligence we
attain … in this life, it will rise with us in the resurrection.” From the Prophet Joseph Smith we also learn that “God has … a time …
appointed … when He will bring all His subjects, who have obeyed His
voice and kept His commandments, into His celestial rest. This rest is of such perfection and glory, that man has need of a preparation
before he can, according to the laws of that kingdom, enter it and enjoy
its blessings. … God has given certain laws to the human family, which,
if observed, are sufficient to prepare them to inherit this rest."
“O ye that embark in the service of God,
see that ye serve him with all your heart, might, mind and strength,
that ye may stand blameless before God at the last day.
“Therefore, if ye have desires to serve God ye are called to the work."
We came to this mortal experience to acquire a body, to be tried and tested. We are to form families and be sealed in holy temples, with joy and
loving relationships that endure eternally. To these everlasting truths,
we are personally rooted.
Branches of our families and of the
gospel bear fruit to enrich our lives. God’s work and His glory—“to
bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man”—can become ours.We can dwell with Him and with our families forever. Those blessings will be granted to the faithful in His own way and time.
From the President of the Church to the newest deacon, we are
responsible to the Lord. We are to be true and faithful and live by
every principle and doctrine that He has given to us. We cannot
compromise a revelation or a commandment committed to our charge. He
trusts us to “build up the kingdom of God, and to establish his
righteousness."
The first lesson of the new year and the new program! This lesson serves as an introduction to the new program that was introduced in the October 2018 General Conference, and begins a new year of home-centered gospel study. It also will be our first lesson as part of the new 2 hour block for church tomorrow.
The intro states the following:
The purpose of Come, Follow Me—For Individuals and Families
is to help you come unto Christ and become more deeply converted to His
gospel. This resource can help you understand the scriptures and find
in them the spiritual strength you and your family need. Then, in your
Church classes, you will be prepared to share insights and encourage
your fellow Saints in their efforts to follow Christ.
A helpful set of resources can be found here. It includes a link to a video that talks about the importance of taking sacred things seriously and the value of keeping a journal.
"We call upon parents to devote their best efforts to the teaching and
rearing of their children in gospel principles which will keep them
close to the Church. The home is the basis of a righteous life, and no
other instrumentality can take its place or fulfill its essential
functions in carrying forward this God-given responsibility"
It's interesting I happened to post this article at the same time as the First Presidency Statement on Temple Worship: I am excited to go to the Temple soon to see what has been adjusted, but for now I am grateful to know that we are being led "line upon line" and that the possibility exists in the future for continued revelation. The statement is as follows:
"Whenever
the Lord has had a people on the earth who will obey His word, they
have been commanded to build temples. Scriptures document patterns of
temple worship from the times of Adam and Eve, Moses, Solomon, Nephi,
and others.
With the restoration of the gospel in these latter days, temple
worship has also been restored to bless the lives of people across the
world and on the other side of the veil as well.
Over these many centuries, details associated with temple work
have been adjusted periodically, including language, methods of
construction, communication, and record-keeping. Prophets have taught
that there will be no end to such adjustments as directed by the Lord to
His servants.
A dedicated temple is the most holy of any place of worship on
the earth. Its ordinances are sacred and are not discussed outside a
holy temple."
Danger lurks when we divide ourselves with expressions such as “my private life,” “my professional life,” or even “my best behavior.” Living life in separate compartments can lead to internal conflict and exhausting tension. To escape that tension, many people unwisely resort to addicting substances, pleasure seeking, or self-indulgence, which in turn produce more tension, thus creating a vicious cycle.
Inner peace comes only as we maintain the integrity of truth in all aspects of our lives. When we covenant to follow the Lord and obey His commandments, we accept His standards in every thought, action, and deed.
